AE3: taking over the product and reducing cloud costs

AE3 brought me in to take over an application whose development had been abandoned. Since the takeover, I have been its sole developer, responsible for both the product and its infrastructure.

Taking technical responsibility

Taking over a product starts with understanding what already exists: user journeys, the data model, dependencies and operational requirements. Source code is only part of the picture.

At AE3, I am responsible for maintaining and developing the existing application as its sole developer.

Across the application and infrastructure

My work covers the interactions between the interface, processing, data and hosting, bringing an overall understanding of the system to product development.

  • Implement changes and fixes in the existing application.
  • Maintain an overall understanding of the product and its technical dependencies.
  • Review operating costs against the services the product needs.

Cloud costs reduced by a factor of approximately five

I reduced cloud cloud costs to roughly one fifth of their previous level while retaining equivalent services.

The important connection is between application knowledge and infrastructure decisions: reducing spending while preserving the services the product needs.

Taking over an existing application requires technical continuity. I can work on both the code and the operational questions that come with it.
